Chulita Lizzy al Toque - Siguen Festejando

This mix is dedicated to the Peruvian people, and as a celebration of Afro-Peruvian music and culture, it’s especially dedicated to the Afro-Peruvian community. This mix is also dedicated to Inti Sotelo Camargo and Bryan Pintado Sanchez, two young people who were killed by police while protesting the unjust coup that happened in Peru this November. This is also dedicated to the people who took to the streets for many days, successfully overturning the coup and who continue to march up until now in hopes of rewriting the Peruvian constitution and righting the wrongs of Peru’s past for a better and more just future.

— Chulitx Lizzy al Toque

Today, we feature a mix from one of our very own Chulitxs - the tunes comes directly from their vinyl collection. This mix comes from Chulita Lizzy al Toque of CVC Bay Area.

Lizzy al Toque is a Peruvian American vinyl dj based in the Bay Area. She’s been collecting vinyl for the last ten years with her love of vinyl starting in Peru, where she collected chicha records. Since then, her Peruvian collection has expanded to cumbia, musica criolla, rock, and electronic. Pre-and-post-pandemic, you can find her spinning cumbia, funk, disco, rock and new wave with CVC at bars around San Francisco and Oakland. Find her other Peruvian vinyl mixes on Chulita Vinyl Club’s Soundcloud.

On the content of this mix: The music in this mix falls into the category of ‘musica criolla’, traditional Peruvian music that contains many genres that span Peru’s Black, Indigenous and Spanish traditions. I especially chose to focus on Afro-Peruvian music and artists, a rich musical tradition, which just a small part of is shared here. See the tracklist for genres. All music in this mix is recorded from vinyl. Cover photo is Jesús Vásquez con Lucila Campos from el Archivo Histórico de El Comercio.

**Content Warning**

From 22:40 to 26:20 is the song El Mayoral. This song discusses life as a Black slave and is a song about calling for a slave revolt.

From 26:20 to 29:10 is the performance of a poem called “Me Llamaron Negra” by activist Victoria Santa Cruz. This poem discusses being discriminated against and being called “black” in a derogatory way on the street.

Many of these songs have been covered many times by many artists. For this reason, I have named the performer, then the original composer/performer in parentheses. After that, I’ve named the genre. If there is no one named in a parenthesis, then it’s most likely that song is a standard (excluding Herida Obscura, which was written by Chabuca Granda).
