Chulita Marvelouz - Rockera Soul Gangsta Queen

This mix is a tripppp. The songs in this mix are a blend of post punk, rock en español, cumbia, hip hop, neo soul and gangsta rap. As a youth I was independently drawn to rock and punk while my immediate landscape of South Central LA provided rap influences and was also immersed in cumbia rhythms at home.
This mix is complex, with themes of identity, hood kid experiences and amores and life trips. It's exploration, its struggle, its love and heartbreak. It's learning to be all of me: the Rockera Soul Gangsta Queen. - DJ Marvelouz

Every week we feature a mix from one of our very own Chulitas- the mix comes directly from her vinyl collection.

This week's mix comes directly from DJ Marvelouz's collection.

DJ Marvelouz was born and raised in LA is building in Oakland, dreaming in Mexico. Come out and listen to DJ Marvelouz (CVC Bay Area) spin tunes at our next event.

The Alcalde + Chulita Vinyl Club

“It made me more confident in what I have to offer to my community,” Calle says. “It has opened my eyes and my ears to new sounds, new people, and new ways of talking about life. As an international student, I thought I couldn’t participate in a community. Now, I know I can.”

The University of Texas at Austin's alumni publication The Alcalde speaks to Chulita Vinyl club members about their role on and off the UT Austin campus. Take a read!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, NINA SIMONE!

Where would the world be—much less our Chulita vinyl collections—if the world had never been graced with the musical genius of the High Priestess of Soul?!

Born Eunice Kathleen Waymon in Tryon, North Carolina on February 21st, 1933, she was one of the most extraordinary artists of the twentieth century, an icon of American music. She was the consummate musical storyteller, who used her remarkable talent to create a legacy of liberation, empowerment, passion, and love through a magnificent body of works.

She earned the moniker ‘High Priestess of Soul’ for she could weave a spell so seductive and hypnotic that the listener lost track of time and space as they became absorbed in the moment. She was who the world would come to know as Nina Simone (1933-2003). -excerpt from the official Nina Simone website .

LA GENTE UNIDA

"The whirlwinds of revolt will continue to shake the foundations of our nation until the bright day of justice emerges. But there is something that I must say to my people, who stand on the warm threshold which leads into the palace of justice: In the process of gaining our rightful place, we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds. Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred. We must forever conduct our struggle on the high plane of dignity and discipline."

- Excerpt from Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech delivered 28 August 1963, at the Lincoln Memorial, Washington D.C. THANK YOU, Dr. King.

“We need to step up and show that we’re here and that we’ve always been here,” says Xochi Solis, 35, a member of CVC’s Austin chapter. She sees CVC’s existence as an opportunity of cultural connection and storytelling. “As I become more and more engaged with my CVC chapter and the others nationally, I believe we are truly arriving on the scene as accomplished DJs in a male-dominated field, but that we are also nurturing and developing a safe space for each individual mujer to tell their own personal narratives through the culture of sound.”

Ms. Magazine + Chulita Vinyl Club

"The CVC is what happens when you smash together collectivism, activism and expression. Grown from cities experiencing massive urban upheaval, waves of gentrification or cataclysmic change in neighborhoods that are (or were) historically made up of people of color, CVC nowe has branches in Austin, San Antonio, the Rio Grande Valley, Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area."
