CVC Austin Featured in an award-winning Documentary

Before the pandemic three of the Chules from #ChulitaVinylClubATX spent a glorious week with the film crew from LURE Berlin. We told our story from our individual points of view of what being a part of the CVC community means to us. Plus, we showed off one of our favorite woman-led records stores in Central Texas—Janie’s Record Shop in San Antonio. The resulting documentary short is now finished and making the rounds at film festivals around the world with a stop here in Austin as part of the Austin Film Festival.

MORE ABOUT THE FILM

Nothing makes you feel more at home like music does. For these DJs, home was created by playing music. Chulita Vinyl Club was created in 2014 with the purpose to combat the diminishing culture surrounding Latinxs, Tejanxs, Chicanxs, Xicanx, Afro-Latinx and other groups by playing and collecting vinyl to share with the world. The group, a communal safe space for LGBTQ+, women, and people of color, focuses on creating a space where members of all backgrounds can discover music in a judgement free and open environment. Members Xochi Solis, Natalia Rocafuerte, and Camila Torres-Castro take us to their favorite Central Texas women founded record store—Janie’s Record Shop in San Antonio, TX—where they share their vinyl collections, struggles with the loss of identity being second and third-generation immigrants, and their reclamation process through the records they spin.
